Philadelphia Group Transportation: Marathon & Holidays

Philadelphia's own visitor bureau publishes the rule that shapes a group trip here: motorcoaches cannot park on city streets. What a coach gets instead is a published loading zone, and the main one allows 10 to 15 minutes. On marathon weekend, November 20 to 22, four of those zones sit where the races start and finish.

So the first thing OurBus Charters settles on a Philadelphia group transportation booking is where the coach waits, not how many seats it has.

All times Eastern. Two dates on that list do the damage. Saturday stacks Christmas Village's opening with two race starts, the half at 7 a.m. and the 8K at 11. Sunday puts a marathon in Center City and a Steelers game nine-plus hours later, at a kickoff the NFL can still move.

LOVE Park sits at the Parkway's southeast end, the same corridor as the 22nd Street start. In 2022, the most recent closure list the city published, Center City streets reopened by 2 p.m. — so a Saturday morning market arrival is the one to avoid.

Why does Philadelphia have no legal curb for a parked coach?

Because the city's own visitor bureau publishes the rule in one sentence: "Motorcoaches and buses are prohibited from parking on Philadelphia streets."

That turns every stop into a loading zone question. The main one for a Center City group is the Independence Transportation Center, reached from Race Street between 5th and 6th. It holds eleven coaches, and the allowance is 10 to 15 minutes to load or unload.

Other zones are named for the attraction they serve, such as these five:

· The Convention Center, on North Broad at Cherry.

· The Franklin Institute, on the west side of 20th.

·  The Art Museum, at its west entrance driveway.

· The Rodin Museum, on the north side of the Parkway.

· The Barnes Foundation, on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Four of those zones are the problem. We found the Art Museum, the Rodin, the Barnes and the Franklin Institute on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway or just beside it — the stretch where both races start, and where the marathon finishes at the Art Museum steps. They are the obvious choice for a Parkway group and the wrong one on a race morning.

The race publishes nothing for motorcoaches: no drop-off point, no group arrival instructions, and an FAQ that points only at SEPTA. The 2026 route is not out either, so nobody can tell you which zones stay clear. Of the published zones, the Convention Center is the farthest from the start and about three blocks from Christmas Village.

For parking between runs, the city points to the Callowhill Bus Center at 114 Callowhill Street, about forty secured spaces with a driver lounge, and a four-space bus area at the Autopark at Old City. The city's group-tour guide lists no day rate for either, so have your operator confirm the cost.

· The 2026 closure list is not out yet. Philadelphia releases it roughly a week before the race, so confirm the streets in mid-November.

· Do not trust an undated closure page. One phila.gov press-release URL still serves the 2016 list with no year on it.

· In 2022, the most recent list published, no-parking along the route started at 2 a.m. on both race days.

What are Philadelphia's idling rules for a waiting coach?

Barely at all, and this is the fact that decides the shape of the day. The City's Air Management Regulation IX caps consecutive idling at two minutes, which on its own rules out holding a warm coach outside a market. A layover is treated separately and gets zero minutes — the regulation never defines the term, so read it as the wait between runs with the group off the coach.

The limits cover any vehicle over 8,500 pounds gross weight or seating more than twelve. That is every coach, mini coach, school bus and minibus in a charter fleet:

· Two minutes of consecutive idling as the baseline, and zero for layovers.

· Five minutes when it is below 32°F.

· Twenty minutes when it is below 20°F.

· Twenty minutes for air-conditioned buses with sealed windows — but only at 75°F or above, so it will not help you in November or December.

The city contradicts itself here, and we found both versions on phila.gov: Regulation IX says two minutes, while the 2025 operator brochure says five and drops the cold-weather tiers altogether. Plan to the stricter number.

Pennsylvania's idling act allows a bus fifteen minutes in any sixty when passengers other than the driver are aboard for heat or air conditioning — but that is the rule outside Philadelphia. The act preserves stricter pre-2007 local rules in first-class counties, and Philadelphia is one, so the city's two minutes governs here either way.

The practical consequence is simple. Between the parking ban and the two-minute cap, a coach has nowhere legal to wait with the engine on — so OurBus Charters puts Center City groups on a shuttle bus rental making timed returns, or releases the coach to a bus facility and recalls it. Individual runners traveling in from New York can take scheduled bus tickets to Philadelphia instead of a group vehicle.

Which Eagles home dates fall in November and December?

Five of them, and the Steelers game is the one that collides with the marathon.

Date

Kickoff

Opponent

Sun Nov 8

1:00 p.m.

Giants

Sun Nov 22

4:25 p.m.

Steelers

Sun Dec 13

1:00 p.m.

Colts

Sat Dec 19

5:00 p.m.

Seahawks

Thu Dec 24

8:15 p.m.

Texans

The three Sunday afternoon kickoffs can still be moved by the NFL. November 8 and 22 carry twelve days' notice, but December 13 carries as little as six, so reconfirm that one the week of the game. The Saturday and Thursday dates are not eligible to be moved to a later slot.

Where do buses park on an Eagles home date?

· Oversized-vehicle parking changed on October 4, 2026. Reporting of the operator's announcement puts it at $200 for four spaces. An attendant now assigns the lot instead of the driver picking one, companion cars are no longer allowed alongside, and oversized vehicles moved to the arena lot and upper Lot N. Lincoln Financial Field's own page still shows the older $100 figure, so confirm the rate with the operator before you travel rather than trusting either number here.

· No bus category at all. We found no bus drop-off point and no bus lot on any of the four stadium pages we checked, and nothing that gives a full-size coach its own rate, such as the Lot L that MetLife names for charter buses. What the stadium does say is that lots are generally open four and a half hours before kickoff.

Send this and we can price it

Give us the date, whether it is one of those five game days or inside the race weekend, your arrival and departure times, the headcount, and the pickup point. Then request a free charter quote or call 844-200-2364.

A Philadelphia charter bus rental for a full group usually means a full-size coach. Rates, minimums and refund terms sit on the charter bus rental prices page.

Philadelphia licenses tour bus operations and does not define the term on its own permit page, so whether a private charter is caught by it is genuinely unclear. That is the operator's problem rather than yours: OurBus Charters checks DOT compliance, insurance and safety history before a trip is confirmed.

We checked every date, time and rule here against the teams', the race's and the city's own documents on October 12, 2026. We have not published the 2026 marathon closure streets, the stadium's tailgating equipment rules or any lot-closing time, because none of the three appears on a page we could find. About us, our fleet and our coverage sit on the OurBus Charters homepage; to contact a planner directly, call 844-200-2364.

Philadelphia group transportation FAQ

Where can a charter bus drop off in Center City Philadelphia?

At a published motorcoach loading zone. Buses cannot park on Philadelphia streets, so the zones are where a coach is meant to load. The main one is the Independence Transportation Center, entered from Race Street between 5th and 6th, with eleven spots and a published 10-to-15-minute limit.

How long can a charter bus idle in Philadelphia?

Two consecutive minutes under the city's Air Management Regulation IX, and zero while on layover, rising to five minutes below 32°F and twenty below 20°F. The city's 2025 operator brochure says five minutes instead, so plan to the stricter figure. Pennsylvania's fifteen-minutes-an-hour allowance for passengers aboard does not override it.

Can a coach stop near the Philadelphia Marathon start?

Not at the zones you would expect. Both races start at 22nd Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and the marathon finishes at the Art Museum steps, and the Art Museum, Rodin, Barnes and Franklin Institute zones all sit on or beside that stretch. The Convention Center zone on North Broad at Cherry is the farthest published zone from the start.

What changed about oversized vehicle parking at Eagles games?

The sports complex revised it on October 4, 2026. Per reporting of the operator's announcement, oversized vehicles now pay $200 for four spaces, an attendant assigns the lot, and companion cars are no longer permitted alongside. The stadium's own page has not been updated, so confirm the rate with the operator.

Can a group visit Christmas Village the week of Thanksgiving?

Not on three of those days. It runs November 21 to December 27, 2026 but closes November 23, 24 and 25, and again on Christmas Day. Hours are noon to 8 p.m., to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The market publishes nothing for motorcoaches, so arrival planning comes from the city's zone list.
