McCormick Place Charter Bus: Gates, Parking and Shuttles
A private charter bus at McCormick Place uses different gates than the free hotel shuttles. The venue assigns private charters to Gate 26 at the South Building, Gate 42 at West, Gates 20 and 21 at North, and Gate 38 at Lakeside Center. Buses stage in Lot F. OurBus Charters confirms your gate with the show organizer before the trip.
That distinction decides more than it sounds like it should. PACK EXPO International returns October 18 to 21, 2026, filling all four buildings, and the 2024 edition drew 48,000 attendees plus 29,500 exhibitor staff, a record 77,500 people across 1.32 million net square feet. We analyzed the venue's published gate map, its parking rates and the show's own transportation guidance to work out when a group should ride the free shuttle and when it needs its own bus.

Which gates can a charter bus use at McCormick Place?
Private charter gates are the entrances McCormick Place assigns to chartered coaches and limousines, and they sit apart from the hotel shuttle gates on purpose. A driver sent to a hotel-shuttle gate has to clear that queue before loading.
Building | Private charter | Hotel shuttle | Taxi, rideshare and accessible |
South Building | Gate 26. | Gates 1 to 3. | Gate 4 for taxi, rideshare and accessible; Gate 25 accessible. |
North Building | Gates 20 and 21, shared with hotel shuttles and limos. | Gates 20 and 21. | Gate 22 for taxi. |
West Building | Gate 42, which also takes accessible drop-off. | Gates 43 and 44. | Gate 40 for taxi, rideshare and accessible. |
Lakeside Center | Gate 38, shared with limos and rideshare. | Gates 31 to 34. | Gate 30 and Gate 37 for taxi and accessible. |
Two practical notes come out of that table, and both change how a pickup is planned. The North Building is the only place where charters and hotel shuttles share a gate, so a North-hall group should expect company at the curb. Lakeside Center is the other one to watch, because Gate 38 is the only Lakeside gate where charters and rideshare share a curb. For example, a client group leaving Lakeside at close does better boarding a few minutes early than hunting for a coach among the rideshare cars. West Building groups have the cleanest split of the four, since Gate 42 handles charters and accessible drop-off while the shuttles work Gates 43 and 44 next door. Tell your account manager the hall number rather than just the show name, and on a private charter bus rental the gate follows from it.
Where do buses park and stage at McCormick Place?
Lot F is McCormick Place's designated bus staging lot, marked on the venue's parking map as bus staging rather than public parking. It exists so coaches have somewhere legal to sit between a morning drop and an afternoon pickup, which is the shape of almost every convention charter. Your account manager confirms the entrance for your dates.
Lot B is the 1,800-space surface lot on Moe Drive, and it handles bus and RV parking at $40 per day overnight with in-and-out privileges, while cars pay $18 for the day. The garages are not an option, and the reason is height. Lot A is a six-level garage with 8-foot clearance, and Lot C, the underground garage serving Lakeside Center, clears 6 feet 4 inches. Neither admits a motor coach, a school bus or most Sprinter vans carrying roof equipment. Two smaller lots round out the campus, Lot D at 18th Street and Lot E at 24th Street, and the venue notes that Lot E opens only for certain events. When we matched the published parking rates against the fleet, we found the rule is simple: anything taller than a passenger van uses Lot B or stages in Lot F.
For longer gaps, downtown's motorcoach options still apply. The McCormick Place Marshalling Yard sits at 31st Street and Lake Shore Drive, entered from Moe Street. Choose Chicago's 2025 travel professionals guide lists it as a fenced lot, open around the clock, at $38 per day. The catch is that it closes to coaches during very large trade shows, and a show of PACK EXPO's size can qualify. That is the kind of detail worth settling in the quote rather than at 7 a.m. on the first show morning.
Should your group ride the show shuttle, book a charter, or take the L?
For most conference groups the honest answer is a mix. The free shuttle handles the middle of the day, and a charter handles everything the shuttle was never designed to cover. This table is the comparison we run with corporate clients before quoting anything.
Option | What it costs | When it wins | Where it leaves you |
Official show shuttle | Free with an official hotel booking. | Standard show hours, if your hotel is on the route list. | Drops at all buildings, picks up at South, Lakeside and West. |
Private charter | Quoted by the hour, 5-hour minimum. | Off-list hotels, early setup, evening events, offsite tours. | Your gate, your schedule, one driver all week. |
Rideshare | Per car, with surge at closing. | One or two people, off-peak. | Gate 40 at West, Gate 4 for both South and North, Gate 38 at Lakeside. |
CTA and Metra | $2.50 CTA rail, $2.25 CTA bus. | Solo trips to the Loop between sessions. | Green Line at Cermak-McCormick Place, two blocks from West. |
The free shuttle deserves credit for what it does. PACK EXPO runs complimentary buses between its official hotels and the campus, into McCormick in the morning and back in the afternoon, and the show says those schedules and pickup points can change. It is the right answer for an attendee sleeping on the route and working standard hours. Transit is genuinely good here too. The Green Line's Cermak-McCormick Place station sits two blocks from the West Building, CTA buses drop on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive between the main entrances, and the Metra Electric platform on Level 2.5 of the Grand Concourse reaches downtown in about seven minutes, though Metra fares vary by zone.
The bottom line: the shuttle is built for the average attendee, and exhibitor teams are not average. They arrive before doors, leave after teardown, and carry things.
What does the free shuttle not cover?
Four gaps come up on nearly every trade-show quote. Booth crews need the floor before the 9 a.m. open and often stay past the 5 p.m. close, which sits outside the shuttle's morning-in, afternoon-out pattern. Hotels booked outside the official block are not on the route at all. Evening commitments such as client dinners, offsite plant tours and receptions happen after the shuttle has stopped for the day. Airport runs are their own trip: O'Hare is about 20 miles out, roughly 26 minutes without traffic, and Midway is under 10 miles, roughly 16 minutes. Any one of the four is reason enough to hold your own vehicle. None of that is a criticism of the service, which does exactly what it promises. It is a question of scope, and scope is what a quote settles.
In our experience the cleanest fix is one vehicle held for the week rather than a scramble of cars each evening. A shuttle bus rental can run a fixed hotel loop on show mornings and convert to dinner runs at night, and corporate transportation services keeps one account manager across all of it. Groups arriving from the region often book the drive in too, from Detroit, Cleveland or Minneapolis, and keep the same coach all week.
Multi-day programs also have a federal limit to respect. A passenger-carrying driver may drive up to 10 hours after 8 consecutive hours off duty and may not drive after 15 hours on duty, under the FMCSA hours-of-service rules. A 6 a.m. first pickup and an 11 p.m. last drop is not one driver's day, so a week-long shuttle is quoted with that in mind.
How much does a McCormick Place charter cost?
OurBus Charters publishes rates of $130 to $350 per hour depending on the vehicle, with a 5-hour minimum. A trade-show week is priced by the hours the vehicle is held, so the daily loop matters more than the mileage does. Tolls, parking fees and permits are part of the itemized quote you approve before booking, which is worth knowing at a campus where bus parking carries its own daily rate.
Group | Vehicle and rate | Hours | Estimate | Per person |
50-person booth team, hotel loop, 4 days | Motor coach, 200-250/hr | 40 | 8,000-10,000 | 40-50 per day. |
30 clients, one evening dinner run | Mini coach, 190-230/hr | 5 minimum | 950-1,150 | 32-38 each. |
12 executives, airport transfers | Sprinter van, 130-150/hr | 6 | 780-900 | 65-75 each. |
Compare every vehicle on the charter bus rental prices page. Deposits run 10 to 25 percent, with 25 percent on most trips, and the balance falls due 15 days before travel. Count back 15 days from your first pickup rather than from the show's opening bell. An exhibitor team traveling October 16 or 17 for setup is working to a October 1 or 2 deadline, while a group arriving for the Sunday open has until October 3. Major events are worth booking one to two months ahead, and recurring shuttles can often be arranged in about two weeks. Inside a month, ask about remaining availability instead of assuming the date is gone.
